When I lived in St.John's, while for a short time, I fell in love with the local music scene. The underground bands that have a following in the cultured city are some of my most loved songs and performances.
The likes of Hey Rosetta! who've been having songs featured on commercials and tv shows such as the CBC series "Wild Roses" on Tuesday nights, have been old news to the town and people of St.John's and while up here in Fort McMurray I cannot go into a music store without hearing them, they could have never gotten that far without the people from home.
A good friend of mine has been getting noticed lately, he has been featured at the George Street Festival, the SOCAN songs and stories stage, MusicNL awards, and is currently in Memphis playing for venues. I feel in love with his music the very first time I ever heard him, and while I have great respect and understanding of jazz & blues, my friends did not. I brought them to a show at the Fat Cat on George and thats when I realized how addictive his music can be. The featured artist/band I am speaking of is Chris Kirby and the Marquee.
Chris has been described as " a young blues songwriter with a sound beyond his years...", his debut CD "Chris Kirby on Rum and Religion" has been unoffically vlassified as "modern pop-blues", and the Marquee with consists of Craig Follett on bass and Mark Marshall on drums, bring the tight arrangements and spontaneous jams to a unique and unforgettable show everytime.
CK&M are coming out with a new album called Vampire Hotel, you can pre-order with free shipping from his myspace, and have access to songs and lyrics on songbids.
P.S. My personal favorites are Crime in F# minor, and Tell Me Something.
Chris was recognized as being a talent to reckon with by Gordie Johnson, of Big Sugar and his latest Grady. With a guitar master like Gordie getting a hold on an already well developed artist - you know there are only big things to come.
